Ten prime summer weekends. Two of them belong to races, one belongs to fireworks, and the rest are yours. If you live on the lake or in the neighborhoods above it, the difference between a good Saturday and a frustrating one usually comes down to knowing which weekend is which, and which trailhead or table to point at when West End fills up by 10 a.m.
This is the local's version of the calendar, built around the events, trail conditions, and small-business hours that are actually running this summer.
The summer calendar, in one place
Most of what's worth clearing your schedule for is concentrated in a six-week stretch from late July through mid-August. Here's the shape of it:

The triathlon runs Half (70.3), Olympic, Sprint, Kids Triathlon, Aquabike, and Duathlon formats, which is why the west shore road pattern gets weird all weekend, not just Saturday morning. If you were planning a casual paddle that weekend, move it to Sunday afternoon or shift east.
What West End Beach actually is, in numbers
If you've lived here a season or two, you've been. If you're newer, the shorthand: it's the only lifeguarded swim beach on Donner Lake, and it doubles as the finish line for both major summer events.
The specifics that matter:
- A 12-acre day-use beach on the West Shore with American Red Cross Certified Lifeguards supervising the designated swim area during the summer months.
- Amenities are open 7 days a week starting June 22.
- Typically opens for the season in late May, with a daily admission fee of $15 for non-residents and $9 for residents plus reduced rates on season passes.
- Off Donner Pass Road and Southshore Drive, popular with families for its roped-off swimming area, play structure, snack stand, volleyball nets, and kayak, paddleboat and stand-up paddle board rentals.
- Dogs are not allowed at West End Beach, along with glass and smoking, per the Truckee-Donner Recreation & Park District.
If you're bringing a dog, that's your cue to walk the east end at Donner Memorial State Park instead, where leashed dogs are welcome on the shoreline and trails.
The three weekends the lake gets loud
Think of these as the weekends the lake stops being a backyard and starts being a venue.
Fourth of July. The parade in the morning, fireworks over the lake at night. Free event shuttles sponsored by the Town of Truckee serve Prosser, Glenshire, Sierra Meadows, Donner Lake, Tahoe Donner, and Northstar from 8am to 2pm. Paid parking at Donner Memorial State Park is $10 and is expected to fill by mid-morning. If you own on the lake, this is the night to invite the guests you owe favors to. If you're driving in, park once and stay put.
Triathlon weekend, July 25–26. Expect road-side racers along South Shore Drive from very early Saturday. The Sprint and Kids races bring the largest number of casual spectators through West End; the 70.3 draws the earliest wetsuit crowds. Non-athletes: this is a great morning for a Rim Trail hike or a long breakfast in town.
Donner Lake Swim, August 8. Expect water temperature 65 to 68 degrees at 5,933 ft altitude. Spectators must pay the West End Beach entry fee, and buying tickets before race day is recommended for smoother entry. This is the quieter of the two race weekends for road traffic, but the finish line at West End is worth walking down to if you're within a mile.
Rule of thumb: if the weekend has a bib number attached to it, the lake belongs to visitors from ~6 a.m. to ~1 p.m. Plan your own lake time for late afternoon, or take the day off the water entirely.
The Donner Lake Rim Trail, by trailhead
Every Rim Trail conversation should start with which trailhead makes sense for the day you have. When complete, the trail will offer users a 23-mile loop through the high country surrounding Donner Lake; currently 15 miles are complete, with 9 of them open to bicycle use. It's built and maintained largely by the Truckee Donner Land Trust with volunteer crews and partners.
The three access points worth knowing:
- Glacier Way (in Tahoe Donner). The family-friendly launch. A 4-mile section stretches west below Skislope Way in Tahoe Donner, passing through mixed conifer forest, massive granite boulders and open vistas with views of Donner Lake and the Sierra Crest, eventually reaching the Land Trust's picnic table at the Johnson Canyon Overlook. Best for a two-hour out-and-back with kids or a lunchtime run.
- Johnson Canyon (off the Donner Lake Interchange on I-80). Often overlooked because of its proximity to I-80 and its appearance as offering little shade, this canyon has nice shady spots, aspen groves, lots of wildlife, and great sections of the Rim Trail. Underrated on hot afternoons.
- Northwoods Boulevard. The DLRT starts on Northwoods Boulevard, across the street from the Trout Creek paved trail that connects to downtown Truckee, which makes it the easiest trailhead if you're leaving from town on a bike.
Early-season note: Trailforks status updates for the Donner Lake Rim Trail and Summit Lake section were logged June 1 and June 8, 2026, and AllTrails reports through spring still flagged patchy snow on north-facing aspects at higher elevations. By mid-July that's a non-issue on the main sections, but if you're planning to push toward Summit Lake in June, expect wet feet.
For mountain bikers, the section between the Warren Lake Trail intersection and Summit Lake is one of the most popular hikes in the area, so bikers should be prepared to encounter a number of hikers, especially on summer weekends, and slow down as they pass. It's a shared trail, and the etiquette shows.
Where to eat on either end of a lake day
Two anchors on the lake itself, both walkable from most South Shore Drive addresses.
Donner Lake Kitchen, at 13720 Donner Pass Road, is the pre-hike, post-swim breakfast option. Run by the Money family serving breakfast and lunch to Truckee since 1994, it's named after the lake across the street and is known for local-favorite huevos rancheros and daily specials. Weekend mornings run long, so it's a much better call on a weekday.
The Pub at Donner Lake, at 15963 South Shore Drive, is the afternoon-and-evening counterpart. Family run and operated since 2019, specializing in craft cocktails and elevated pub fare. It sits close enough to West End that a post-paddle walk is realistic.
If you're heading uphill for dinner instead, the newer restaurant to know is The Sawyer at Schaffer's Mill, which sits at 5,817 feet in Truckee with an indoor bar overlooking Lookout Mountain and the golf course, and features a locally crafted all-day menu of shareable salads, sandwiches, and entrees. It's a 10-minute drive from the west end of the lake.
The off-water rhythm most residents forget to use
The mistake newer residents make is treating summer as only lake time. The weekly cadence in town is half the value of living here in July and August.
- Wednesdays: Music in the Park at the amphitheater in Truckee Regional Park, 6:30 to 8:30 pm, June through late August.
- Thursdays: Truckee Thursdays downtown, with live music, food, and vendors.
- Saturdays (July 11 through September 5): Live music at Pizza on the Hill each Saturday from 5–7 pm in Tahoe Donner.
- Summer season: Explore Donner Lake by raft with a California State Parks guide during a free, family-friendly paddling adventure, run out of Donner Memorial State Park.
Stack any two of these against a morning at West End and you have a full Truckee-Donner day without a single line at a trailhead or a table.
